What to do in Mafra Portugal

The Mafra Palace is the largest royal residence ever built in Portugal and one of the biggest palaces in the world. It was built in fulfillment of the vow of King João V (1689-1750), who repented erecting a marvelous building, unprecedented in the country in terms of scale if his wife would give him his firstborn child. His wife gave the monarch a daughter, Barbara Braganza, and the king fulfilled his promise – in November 1717 he laid the foundation stone of his new residence. The construction lasted 13 years and was an unprecedented event in the history of the country. It is said that the number of workers who simultaneously worked on the construction of the giant palace, monastery, and basilica, at times exceeded 40 thousand people.

The realization of Mafra 1573 was carried out with Brazilian money. It was at the beginning of the 17th century that the development of the riches of this South American country began to bring maximum profit. The cost of admission to the Convento de Mafra is €6,00 for a regular ticket, €5,00 for visiting the terraces (by appointment), €3,00 over 65, and free for children under 12 years old (inclusive). Free admission is applicable with a Lisboa Card.
